About the School

Education for Life!

Toolooa SHS is situated in Gladstone, Central Queensland. It has960 students that come from many diverse backgrounds. Gladstone's major industry includes the world's largest Alumina refinery, Queensland Alumina, and Australia's largest aluminium smelter, Boyne Smelters Limited. The region’s industry base also includes tourism, engineering, agriculture, forestry and fisheries.

The school strives to achieve:

  • continual development of Literacy, Numeracy, Communication and Technology skills
  • enhancing a sense of community through civic, social and human interactions
  • evaluating, promotion of and dealing positively with change
  • promoting personal responsibility and accountability
  • promoting a positive work ethic and a healthy balanced life style

History

Toolooa State High School opened in 1981 and has a student population in 2005 of approx. 880. The design of the school is the HS78 Model characterised by faculty buildings spread around the campus. Situated in South Gladstone, the school's boundary is the main highway of Benaraby Road and a major road, Philip Street.

Features

  • School Timetable operates on 20 period week, 70min lessons are usual in the Junior School, - 40 minute lunch breaks occur each day.
  • Junior School Curriculum - 5 CORE subjects, 3 ELECTIVE subjects.
  • Senior School Curriculum - wide choice of Board, Academic, Vocational and SAS subjectsHRE infused in Social Science, Science, HPE.
  • Special Needs teacher assists students with learning difficulties in normal classrooms.
  • Teacher Aides work in classrooms to support the learner.
  • A student Support Team of volunteer parents helps students in classrooms.
  • Toolooa has developed a site of excellence in engineering with strong links with TAFE, Industry and Uni.
  • A fully integrated Career Program is available in Years 8-12
