Quality Education – A key strategy for a broad choice of employment opportunities.
The research is compelling – the longer an individual engages in education the greater opportunity for future successful employment.
The key focus in this discussion is the need to engage with learning. Real engagement requires personal effort in the completion of assigned tasks and participation in the learning process.
At school we talk about a compulsory phase of learning where there is a legislative requirement for students to be at school until they complete Year 10 or reach 16 years of age. This level of educational achievement is seen as the minimum, and I stress the MINIMUM, level to be a functional member of our society.
After the compulsory phase our education system enters a participation phase which offers a range of pathways for students to meet their personal goals. This phase of learning in our school requires students to engage in learning by attending school regularly, completing assigned tasks and participating in lessons. In Years 11 and 12 when students fail to engage, our school will commence a Cancellation of Enrolment process. This process involves a Non-Compliance Letter that requires the student and a parent to meet with a member of our Administration Team to discuss the learning requirements of a senior student. Where the student returns to positive learning habits at school, the process comes to an end. Should this not be the outcome, the student will be asked to show cause as to why their enrolment should not be cancelled. This response will be reviewed by our principal who will determine whether the student will be given further time to comply or their enrolment will be cancelled.
Learning is a life long process and the learning pathways in our community are numerous. The importance of students ‘getting involved’ and ‘taking control’ of their personal learning cannot be over emphasised.
