Saturday 21st March saw a small but enthusiastic group from the P&C working on a project which will help beautify the school grounds and at the same time save money, and assist in preventing flooding in times of high rainfall.
Using money from Community Water Grant – Round 3, the school recently installed two large water tanks at the western end SOSE block. Following rainfall earlier this year the tanks are now full – but the water cannot be used. Funding from this project also allowed for the installation of an electric pump and purchase of materials for the reticulation of the water to the garden beds but the hard work to install the irrigation system needed to be undertaken by our school community. Enter the P&C…..
Our task was to install underground pipe work from the pump to the garden beds under some pavers and through some rather rocky soil. Armed with shovels, spades and rakes and assisted by a Kanga, we completed the job, including reinstalling the paving over the top, and having morning tea, in plenty of time to get home for lunch.
From the edge of the garden beds, rain water will be further distributed through the irrigation system installed by students in Landscaping group in 2008.
If you missed all the fun, don’t despair…..we will be holding another working bee early in Term 2. This time we will be working on Toolooa House and our task will be to install piping from the water tanks to the garden beds that were erected by Gladstone Rotary Club. This project is much larger so we will need your assistance. Date and time will be advertised in the newsletter and on the school notice board. See you then.
