![]() Community Nutritionist, Nicole Starkey, gave an informative address to parents and staff at Toolooa House about healthy eating for a healthy heart last week.
Her recommendations included water as the best beverage choice and:
· a wide variety of fresh, least processed foods
· 5 or more serves of vegetables per day
· 2 serves of fruit and
· a low-saturated fat, low-salt, high-fibre diet.
Nicole stressed that we can all make changes by making healthy food choices, watching portion size, being more physically active and caring for ourselves and our families.
When reading food labels she said to look for:
· the lowest kilojoule content per 100 g
· less than 10g fat per 100g
· less than 3g saturated fat per 100g
· less than 15g sugar per 100g
· greater than 3g fibre per 100g
· less than 120mg sodium per 100g
For the small cost of $20, community members can participate in the Queensland Government Lifestyle Champions promotion which includes 2 workshops and a cooking demonstration and the chance to win various lucky door prizes. For more information please contact Jenny Brooks on 49 714 316. |
