With Health and Physical Education (HPE) being a Key Learning Area, it is compulsory for students in grades 8, 9 and 10 to undertake a HPE program consisting of 3x70 minute lessons per week. For all year levels, students select from a variety of physical activities each term. In conjunction with the physical activity being studied, students will also partake in a theory unit. More specifically, the course of study for the three year levels is as follows:

Grade 10:
TERM 1 — Choice of Sport, Dance and First Aid TERM 2 — Outdoor Education – Archery, Orienteering and Bush Survival TERM 3 and 4 — Students choose either the Physical Education or Physical Recreation Elective
For grades 11 and 12, students have an opportunity to select either the Physical Education or Physical Recreation subject in their course of study. For more information on the two subjects, please refer to the following outlines for each subject
Physical Education
Physical Education is a full QSA subject and contributes equally with other full Board subjects to the students OP (Overall Position) for tertiary entrance requirements, as well as appearing on their Senior Certificate.
Physical Education does away with the strict division of the subject into Theory and Practical areas, as it is activity focused. It places an emphasis on the integration of learning in, about and through physical activity. With the implementation of a new work program in 2005, there is a far greater choice of physical activities that can be undertaken during the course. These sports include, but are not limited to; golf, netball, basketball, volleyball, touch football, badminton and ten pin bowling. These choices will be based on a combination of cohort interest and teacher expertise.
Physical Recreation
Physical Recreation is a relatively new subject being offered in years 11 and 12 which will run in addition to the Physical Education subject. Physical Recreation does not contribute to a student’s OP (overall position), however, it will have an exit level of achievement, which will appear on their Senior Certificate.
Physical Recreation provides opportunities to discover and explore new and varied physical activities. It encourages students to continue to use leisure time in active and constructive ways, make a contribution to their local communities and allows them to exploit their recreational interests.
