Home Economics

Middle School

At Toolooa SHS, students have an opportunity of choosing Home Economics in grade 8. In this subject, students will explore both creative textiles and food studies components. Students in year 9 and 10 can specialise and select either the creative textiles or food studies subject.

Grade 8:

Term 1 — Apron – 3 Design Features

Term 2 — Methods of Cookery

Term 3 — Individually Designed Bag – Hand Construction

Term 4 — Festive Cookery

Grade 9:
Creative Textiles Food Studies
Term 1 Sewing techniques - crazy cushions;

Junior food technology / Nutrition

Term 2 Application of commercial patterns - designand produce boxer/board shorts) Junior food technology /emotional role of food
Term 3 New technology/fabric construction - design Multicultural Australia
Term 4 Sewing techniques/arts and crafts on show

International Cookery design and produce pencil case and festive decorations)

Grade 10:
Creative Textiles Food Studies
Term 1 Design application techniques – design and crafts for the markets Function Catering
Term 2 Special Celebrations
Term 3 Crafts in the market place / business management Towards Independence - Social Role of Food
Term 4 Design and produce one major textile product of their own choice Towards Independence–Food and the Consumer

Senior School

For grades 11 and 12, students have an opportunity to select Home Economics, Early Childhood Studies or Certificate 1 in Hospitality as part of their course of study. For more information on the above subjects, please refer to the following outlines.

Home Economics

Senior Home Economics is a board subject that contributes equally with other full Board subjects to the student’s OP (Overall Position). Senior Home Economics is an academic subject with a strong practical component, focusing on the well-being of individuals and families in everyday activities. It recognises the importance of a practical approach to solving everyday living problems. Students are encouraged to consider issues relating to the well-being of individuals and families from a range of perspective’s, such as social, cultural, political, legal, historical, environmental, economics and ethical perspectives

Early Childhood Studies

Early Childhood Studies is a course designed for students interested in the field of Child Care. Students undertake school study as well as Industry Placement in participating centres e.g. Child Care Centres, Pre-Schools and Schools. The primary focus of this subject is to promote the well being of young children and a greater awareness of the importance of quality childcare practices in the wider community.

Certificate 1 in Hospitality

This course of study is designed for those students interested in a career in Hospitality with linkages to the tourism industry as per the National Training Package. Students undertake school study as well as participating in Industry placement and TSHS catering restaurants (a fee will be charged for Industry placement experience).
