Athletics Carnival 2015

23/07/2015
Athletics Carnival 2015

Last week Toolooa held its annual Athletics Carnival which proved to be an exciting event for all involved. The day commenced in the hall which was filled with an array of colours as the students wore their careport colours. Some of the students chose to take it a step further and even dress up in costume for the day. Costumes included togas, horses and even a cow suit!

Once the guidelines were set and one of our careports (Elliott) had finished chanting for their house, the students moved out to the track where the events commenced. The day ran smoothly with our enthusiastic young athletes competing in a number of events including the 100m, 200m and 800m races. I don’t know if it was the chanting in the hall or the snow cones on sale that helped but it was great to see a number of long-standing school records broken on the day. Our new record holders include:

Congratulations to these students on their individual achievements.

As the day was coming to a close, one question was still on everyone’s mind. Which house was actually leading? With only the relays left there was less than forty points separating the top three houses. At this announcement the shouts of encouragement increased significantly resulting in the first three relays being new records. These records were in the 12 years Boys, Girls and 13 years Boys. The last race of the day was the student-teacher relays in which the teachers formed a team to compete against the students. I think it’s safe to say that these were spectacular sights to watch particularly the boys which came down to a photo finish with Mr Pooley and Henderson Godfrey (year 12) both diving over the finish line!

With the last race complete it was time to announce the Age Champions and overall winning Careport. The following students performed extremely well throughout the day in a number of events and were recognised as the Age Champions for 2015.

Whilst it was great to see Curtis come out on top at the end of the day, I was even more impressed with the high level of participation and support shown throughout the carnival by all students. I look forward to seeing similar results and participation levels at next year’s carnivals.

With all the carnivals over it is time to start looking forward to our other sporting events for the remainder of the year. These include the interschool soccer & touch competitions and of course our annual Sports Awards for 2015.
