Japanese Exchange Students Arrive!

2018 marks the 20th Anniversary between Toolooa State High School and Jonan State High School. In 1996 Gladstone signed a sister city agreement with Saiki City in Japan. 2 years later Toolooa jumped on board and formed a relationship with Jonan State High School and visited the school for the first time. This year Toolooa has been lucky enough to host 12 students and 1 staff member at our school. They have spent 5 fabulous days with Toolooa families.

Throughout their stay they have attended our school and experienced the culture and life of everyday Australia. Specialised subjects; art, cooking and PE classes were organised. Students were exposed to traditional art activities, as well as making lamingtons.
This year the timing of their visit was fantastic. Their visit coincided with Toolooa’s NAIDOC day, exposing the Japanese guests to aboriginal dancing, activities and lunch. Every Japanese student and teacher were able to sit down and enjoy the Kup Mari, traditional curries and damper that was prepared earlier that day. A wonderful cultural experience to start their week-long visit.

Over the weekend, host families spoilt their guests with trips to the zoo, crocodile farm, Cooberrie, beach, Marina and other wonderful spots around Gladstone. Every student fitted into the Australian life very well, enjoying every opportunity that their host families gave them.

This experience allows students to gain extensive knowledge about Japan that they do not learn from a text book, creating lifelong relationships and gaining an appreciation of a contrasting culture to the Japanese one. The student exchange program has been an integral part of the Gladstone/Saiki Sister City relationship since its inception and the Gladstone and Saiki Regions are grateful for this ongoing success and the friendships forged between the two cities.

Japanese Visitors Cooking Class

In true Aussie style, our visiting guests from Saiki, Japan were treated to a lamington and Anzac biscuits cooking class this morning. Something different but they all loved it!
