Hospitality - Lunch Express

Hospitality – Lunch Express

On Tuesday 25th August students from Mrs Peterson’s composite year 11/12 Hospitality class cooked up a storm as part of their assessment for Senior Hospitality. This was an opportunity for the year 12 students to show off their cooking skills and also to help the year 11 students prepare for the same unit which they will do as part of their assessment next term.

The year 12 students are currently completing a unit of work called ‘Lunch Express.’ This is a great opportunity where the students employ a number of skills to plan, budget for, prepare and deliver a delicious lunch to over 70 staff members throughout the school. Through costing various options to testing them out in the kitchen the students were able to come up with a couple of menu options for the staff to choose from for a very affordable price. For a small price of just $7.50 staff members were able to choose from a delicious chicken schnitzel with avocado, cheese and bacon or a scrumptious Mediterranean vegetable stack for the main meal. They then had to choose between a mouth-watering double chock brownie tower or a honey & cinnamon panna cotta for dessert.

Real life tasks such as this give the students a real understanding of what it is like to work in the hospitality industry and exposes them to the pressures and time constraints of working in food preparation. Although the students were very busy with over 70 lunches to prepare in a short amount of time, judging from the smiling faces and full bellies in the PE staffroom, the Lunch Express was a great success. I know my chicken schnitzel was amazing and my double choc brownie tower was to die for.

Overall, Lunch Express was a great success with many staff thoroughly enjoying their lunch and dessert. A big congratulations needs to go out to the year 11/12 hospitality class for their excellent team work and cooperation throughout the delivery of Lunch Express and overall hard work. A massive thankyou and congratulations also to Mrs Jo Peterson for her tireless hard work and commitment to the hospitality students and home economics department in general.

Well done Mrs Peterson and the year 11/12 hospitality students.
