Japanese Exchange Students Visit Toolooa

Japanese Exchange Students Visit Toolooa
Throughout the week of August 12th to August 18, Toolooa was lucky enough to host our Sister school students from Jonan State School in Saiki city, Japan.
This is a biannual event in which we have been participating in for the last 15 years. We believe this is a valuable program for both schools here in Gladstone and Saiki. The students are able to experience each other’s culture and life style. The Japanese students experienced the Australian way of life by being hosted by Toolooa Students. They visited our school, classrooms and specialled lessons; from making Lamingtons in Home economics, Australian art creations, to playing a game of Cricket in PE.
15 Toolooa Students opened up their homes and welcomed these students into their families. By staying in a home, the Japanese visitors get to experience hands on the traditional way of our lives.
From eating dinner, foods, bathing, to even having a back yard BBQ. Over the weekend each host family spoilt their students with visits to Agnes Waters – the Larc, the Rockhampton Zoo and crocodile farm to even traveling to Hervey Bay Whale watching, and Brisbane to the Ekka.
Even simple typical weekend events like sporting activities allowed the Japanese student to compare their hectic life to Australians laid back, run around weekend routines. A huge week was had by all.
Next year Toolooa will adventure over to Saiki and get the opportunity to switch roles and live the life of a Japanese student. We look forward to Jonan visiting again in 2016.
