Mathematic Competitions Review:

What a hectic couple of weeks we have had so far this term in the Maths Department.
Traditionally term 3 is the term for mathematics competitions and this year they have all come in quick succession.
First cab off the rank was the Gladstone District Senior Mathematics Tournament hosted here at Toolooa SHS which saw Toolooa enter a year 11 team and a year 12 team to compete against 6 other teams from surrounding schools. Unfortunately we were unsuccessful in this year’s competition. Our teams competed admirably though and it is good experience for our year 11 team for next year.
Next we had the year 9/10 team challenge hosted by Tannum Sands SHS. Once again, although not successful this year with our reigning champions the year 10 team, our year 9 team did finish second against the other year 9 teams that competed. Let’s hope they will be a force to reckon with next year.
Later that week we had a small group of students from all year levels compete in this year’s Australian Mathematics Competition. This is an international competition which Toolooa SHS students usually perform well in. Unfortunately the results are not published until early term 4 so stay tuned to future editions of the newsletter as I will be publishing the results as they are made available.
As I write this, the third major interschool math competition is underway. This time it is the year 7 and 8’s that get their turn. Hosted by GSHS, this competition is run through the Queensland Association of Mathematics Teachers and will see Toolooa SHS compete against many other teams in the district with a year 7 team and a year 8 team. The teams challenge each other through 5 rounds and a variety of different questioning types.
Good Luck teams.
Lastly, next week will see the final major mathematics competition held. Once again a small group of students from every year level will compete this time in the ICAS Mathematics competition. Like the Australian Maths Competition, the ICAS Math Competition is an international contest and we won’t see the results for some time. As with the AMC I will be publishing results in a future edition of the newsletter so stay tuned for those!
Stop Press!
Results just in from the QAMT yr7/8 maths competition:
We Won!
In a spine tingling tie breaker, Toolooa’s Yr8 team has come away victorious in the 2015 QAMT Yr7/8 Maths Quiz. They now progress to the next stage in Bundaberg in a few weeks’ time. Well done boys and good luck in the next round of competition.
