Optiminds Success

Opti-MINDs Success
Toolooa SHS has had a fantastic run with their Opti-MINDs teams over the past few years and 2015 is no exception. On Sunday the 23rd of August, Miss Bird and I had the privilege of taking six teams to participate in the Rockhampton Regional Opti-MINDs Challenge. Our teams participated in the full range of categories: Science & Engineering, Language Literature and Social Science. They were required to complete a long-term challenge, which they had six weeks to prepare, along with a spontaneous challenge on the day.
All six teams represented Toolooa well. They demonstrated our school’s core values of respect, achievement and responsibility throughout the day and we were very proud.
Two of our teams were particularly successful. Team Four, made up of Nethmini Alahakoon, Jasmine Elliott, Sarah Davis and Emilie Vogler, was awarded the coveted Spirit of Opti-MINDs award, along with second place in their division. Additionally, team two, made up of Jake Holmes, Henry Kean, Jarrod Norris and Nick Versic, took out first place in their science and engineering challenge. This team has now been invited to attend the QLD & WA finals being held in Brisbane later this year.
Opti-MINDs is a fantastic opportunity to see our students succeed in areas outside of the classroom. We are proud of all our students who participated and we are thrilled to see the number of students increasing every year. A special thanks must also go to the parents of the Opti-MINDs students who put in countless hours of supervision during the lead-up to the event. Congratulations to all involved!
