2019 Athletics Carnival

Last week we held our annual Athletics Carnival. It was excellent to see attendance and participation numbers up compared to previous years. This year a few big changes were made to the carnival in order to try and make it a more authentic athletics carnival day. This was done by introducing two of our field events (Long Jump & Shot Put) on the actual athletics day rather than during our pre-carnival events week. Both of these events ran smoothly with significantly higher numbers than normal which was awesome to see. At the conclusion of the day our age champions were announced. The recipients were:

Congratulations to all of our age champions!
After the age champions were announced we introduced our biggest new addition to the carnival. The Spirit Cup! This cup recognises the importance of house spirit through cheering, cleanliness, dress ups and sheer number of students. The cup will be awarded each year to the careport that represents these areas the best. In its inaugural year our Spirit Cup went to HERON!!
With the Spirit Cup out of the way we moved on to our last award of the day. The Overall Points Trophy. Despite strong opposition early in the day Elliott has once again won the Overall Trophy. Well done Elliott! The points for each house can be seen below:

For those who finished in the top two of their athletic events, keep an ear out in the notices for updates about the Port Curtis Athletics Carnival. Permission notes should come out at some stage next week. The carnival itself will be held in Week Two next term. Also, if you haven’t collected ribbons for your events yet they can be collected from the PE staffroom during lunch breaks.
Whilst our carnivals may be over for the year, sport is still very much on the agenda. This term we still have Interschool Rugby League & Netball. Rugby League has already commenced on Thursday afternoons and netball will be on Thursdays in Week 6 & 7. If your son or daughter is interested in being involved in either of these sporting opportunities please ask them to see PE staff during lunch breaks.
