Principal’s Piece — Justin Harrison

Christmas Message
I would like to take this opportunity to wish our students, parents, staff and the wider community a safe and relaxing holiday to end a very busy year. Please be safe on the roads when travelling.
School Resumes
In 2018, Toolooa will again have a split start-up with years 7, 8 and 11 starting on Monday 22 January and the whole school in attendance on Tuesday 23 January. With the upgrade to the shelter not being completed for the start of the 2018 school year, form class procedures, meeting locations and parades will need to be changed. Please monitor the school’s Facebook page prior to school returning for updates.
2017 – Another Positive Year at Toolooa
Academic Success - our students have achieved some of the best results across the region for Literacy and Numeracy in NAPLAN, Queensland Core Skills Test results, Queensland Certificate of Education (QCE)/Queensland Certificate of Individual Achievement (QCIA) attainment (100% of year 12 students), strong results in subject A-C achievement and we continue to lead the way with indigenous student achievement with 100% of students achieving their QCE/QCIA – making it five years in a row.
Instrumental Music - incredible success at the 2017 Eisteddfod with the Symphonic Band achieving first place, Stage Band first place, Concert Band second place and Percussion Ensemble third place.
Arts Showcase - another simply fantastic event showcasing the immense talents of our students in a variety of domains.
Service - our Interact Club led the way with service to community groups and aid organisations; ably supported by our Junior and Senior Student Leadership teams.
Sporting Success – 1 Queensland representative, numerous Capricornia and Port Curtis reps. Another sports awards evening that was well attended to celebrate sporting achievements and say thanks to our coaches and parents.
The above successes do not happen without the outstanding work of all staff at Toolooa and the ongoing support of our parent body. Toolooa SHS is part of an incredibly impressive community.
Year 7’s for 2017
What an impressive group of students! The opportunity for our incoming year 7students to experience two days at Toolooa SHS has been a tremendous success. Getting to know the layout of the school, who some of the teachers are, an understanding of how our days run, as well getting to sample the food from our fantastic tuckshop has been very value. Each year we lose an enormous amount of talent and tradition when our year 12’s transition into life after school and we rely on our incoming students to ‘replenish the stocks’ and bring their own strength to our school. We are very excited about this group coming in. Our Junior Secondary Head of Department Jess Batey, along with our year 7 coordinator, Mr Craig O’Connor have done a great job supporting this transition process at Toolooa High.
Many of our report cards have already been sent out with the last couple of year levels being posted this week. Please spend time sitting down with your child to unpack their report, celebrate their successes and set realistic goals for 2018.
Leaving Staff
The quality of a school cannot exceed the quality of its teachers. This is a simple and obvious statement which has significant meaning at this time of year. The student outcomes achieved at Toolooa SHS this year are reflective of the quality of our teaching and non-teaching staff, some of which are moving on. We would like to thank them for their dedication and commitment to improving the outcomes of students . Good Luck in your future endeavours Ali Denman Mills, Emily Fulwood, Matt Drovandi, LJ Kemp (Maternity), Char Mellars, Ashley Rabbit, Nandini Bhakta, Natalie Jounquay (Maternity) and Tiffany Wardill.
