Principal’s Piece—Garry Goltz

We welcome our new and returning students to Toolooa State High School for 2017!

2016 was an incredibly successful year for our students and our school;

  • Two OP 1’s – Jasmyn Dew and Mitch Carter
  • 90% of OP students between 1- 15
  • 100% QCE/QCIA attainment
  • The fourth consecutive year that all graduating indigenous student received their QCE
  • 9 of the 10 areas of literacy and numeracy measured through NAPLAN saw our students improve more than national improvement
  • Improvement in student attendance

We believe that we are well positioned to build on last year’s success and make 2017 a year to remember.

New Staff
In 2016 we welcome a strong group of new teaching staff members to our school; Sylvia Clarke, David Eborn, Jake Fraser, Ella Halloran and Sue Jerez as well as our new chaplain, Tiffany Wardill; Youth Support Coordinator, Michelle Tory and psychologist Caitlin Roffey. Additionally we have one of our HODs, Tara Stewart returning this year into the Humanities faculty. We look forward to this group contributing positively to the direction of Toolooa State High School in 2016.

Start Up
Students in uniform, with required equipment and a very positive attitude toward learning! What a great way to start the year! We thank our parents for the support we have received around the pick-up and drop-off processes at Toolooa State High School and would like to reinforce the expectation that parents are not driving into the grounds for these. We ask that our parents contact our office to apply for permission to drop students off or pick them up in the grounds. Safety of our students is paramount and cars entering or leaving the grounds during these busy times effects this safety.

Uniform Reminder
School shirts and school pants with the school logo, along with black or white socks is the expectation each and every day. Students will also require a hat or cap if they are in HPE classes or are heading down to our oval of hardcourts during breaks.

Focus Areas for 2017
With some very strong improvements over the course of 2016, we are well positioned in 2017 to continue to support our students’ improvement in our key area:

  • Writing will be our critical focus area with a whole school approach to building writing skills
  • Reading will continue to be targeted with clear importance for all year levels
  • Continual improvement of teaching practice – whilst we have a range of outstanding teaching practices at Toolooa High, we are committed to continuing to support the skills of our teaching team
  • Improve overall attendance figures

Targets for 2017

We have set some very clear targets for 2016:

  • Whole school attendance of a minimum of 91%
  • 100% of graduating year 12 students attaining their Queensland Certificate of Education
  • Improvement for our year 7 and 9 students in Reading and Writing above the national improvement rates

As a staff, we recognise that to achieve these targets we firstly need to support our students to reach their potential. This will continue to be our overarching mantra at Toolooa High.
