Lions Youth of the Year

Lions Youth of the Year is designed to encourage, foster and develop leadership in conjunction with other citizenship qualities in our youth, at the age when they are about to enter the fields of employment or higher education, and provides students with the incentive to pay greater attention to qualities which are so vital in developing our young people into first class citizens. The qualities sought, apart from academic attainments, are those of leadership, personality, sportsmanship, public speaking and good citizenship.

Toolooa has had a very successful tradition regarding Youth of the Year and we have had a number of past students go on to represent our region at various levels of the competition. This year our school leaders, Connor Mulherne and Lauren Brennan, accepted the challenge to participate in the rigorous interview and public speaking process which defines Lions Youth of the Year.

Both students were interviewed about their interests, leadership achievements, academic achievements and knowledge of local and international events by members of the local community. Connor and Lauren then each presented a prepared speech as well as responses to two impromptu questions. Impromptu speaking is something which would make most of quail in fear so congratulations to any student who makes it through the interminably long two minutes!

Both students did a fantastic job of representing our school in the competition which included students from Gladstone State High School and Tannum Sands State High School. Lauren won the event (based on her scores from the interview section, prepared speech and impromptu speech) and will go on to represent our region at the next level of the competition to be held in Biloela.

Congratulations, Lauren, on a well-earned win and we wish you well for the next stage of the event.

Through which students are selected to Youth of the Year is designed to encourage student interest in leadership and the qualities required to take an active and constructive role in the community. A high level of academic, leadership, sporting, public speaking and citizenship achievement is sought in its potential winners. By emphasising these qualities it hopes to provide outstanding role models for the youth of Australia and an overall increase in the confidence of young men and women.

Lions Youth of the Year is an excellent means of assisting Australia’s youth and promoting the essential role of leadership development and community service organisations in maintaining Australia’s high standard of living.

A big Thank You goes to Mrs Ellen Kean for taking a vested interest & preparing our students for this event. It is great to see out teachers give up their time to prepare our students with multiple opportunities to succeed.
