Over the last three weeks 9 brave souls have elected to participate in the first Engaging Adolescents Program. Tonight see the conclusion of this program and in this edition of the newsletter I would like to take this chance to reflect on some key concepts. 
Firstly, parents have a tricky but reward jobs as they are responsible for seeing their child reach maturity, keep safe and build a quality relationship with their teen as they become an adult. Let’s focus on maturity. This means balancing appropriate emotional responses with actual physical events. Sometimes immature child give a 9/10 response to a 4/10 event or conversely a 4/10 response for a 9/10 event. Our goal as parents is to provide enough relational support to our children to help them find the adequate response for an event. 
Secondly, children are still developing in terms of brain functioning. Teens don’t reach brain ‘maturity’ until 25 years old. We know that the Pre-frontal Middle Cortex in the ‘front’ brain is still being developed. Therefore parents once again need to be their child’s ‘off board’ navigation system. As children grow they will increase their ability to rationalise, filter and reason. Until that time we have to remain steady and that brings me to my final point.
Finally, we need enough emotional credits in the bank with our children to have tough conversation when we need to ‘correct their course’. The attachment between a child and a parent is well researched and is shown to be strong with biological ties. As a teen grow, this bond needs to be nurtured in the good times so that we can lean into them in the hard time.
