Third Year Of Success in Opti-MINDS Regional Challenge

Third Year of Success in
Opti-MINDS Regional Challenge
On Sunday the 24th of August, Toolooa SHS was represented by three teams of students in the Rockhampton regional finals of the Opti-MINDS Challenge. All three teams participated in the Science and Engineering challenge against a number of public and private high schools from the Rockhampton region. This category was made up of a ‘long term challenge’ and a ‘spontaneous challenge’ for each of the teams to participate in. All three teams performed well and were commended by the judges for their outstanding ideas. On the day, Toolooa’s team two, consisting of Ven Naik, Dylan Fry, Amber Wright and Kynan Elliott, was awarded the ‘honours’ certificate. Most impressively, team two, made up of Henry Kean, Lachlan Christie, Jake Holmes and Nick Versic, took out the top spot of first place!
The judges were most impressed with the Toolooa’s ingenuity and creativity in the long term challenge. All three teams designed and constructed excellent elevators that were able to shift items weighing up to 300 grams. The most successful teams were able to spend their time effectively as a result of fantastic teamwork and co-operation.
The winning team has been invited to attend the Opti-MINDS State Finals in Brisbane early in term four. They will soon start preparing for the ‘Ideas Market’ held amongst the other winning teams from across Queensland and Western Australia.
If they take out first prize in the State Finals, the team will then be invited to attend the next level of the challenge in New Zealand!
The students represented Toolooa SHS impeccably on Sunday and should be very proud of their achievements. We wish the winning team the best of luck for the State Finals and wait in anticipation to see what they achieve next.
