From The Deputy
With Jess Batey

Over the past fortnight, we’ve had more opportunities to recognise the great things that our students have been doing. We had Junior and Senior parades last week, recognising students who received Gold Awards for their academic performance in term four of 2020. On these parades, we also presented our Junior and Senior Leaders. Following the Junior Parade, our Junior Secondary Leaders spent a half-day session with Mr Capill, learning about what it means to be a great leader, and how to contribute positively to our community.

This fortnight, we’ve also celebrated International Women’s Day, with four of our Senior Leaders attending the community morning tea. On IWD, we considered this year’s theme of #choosetochallenge and what that can mean to each of us. All of us can, and should, play our own role in reducing the gender gap in society.

A selection of our STEM Squad students were fortunate enough to visit CQU’s STEM Central last week and showcase their incredible skills to the Chief Scientist of Queensland, Professor Hugh Possingham! It’s not every day that you get to showcase skills to such a significant figure within the science field, and it was wonderful to see our kids so proud of their achievements. I’d like to thank Mr Capill, our Junior Secondary Head of Department, and Dr Linda Pfiffer from CQU, for making this opportunity happen for our students.

The next couple of weeks are going to be busy. Our students have been spending time during classes and form talking about staying organised and on top of their assessment. The end of each term can be stressful, especially for those students who are in a new phase of learning (eg. first year of high school, or first year in senior schooling). We encourage parents to work with their students on developing a plan, which includes working on tasks and scheduling in times for rest and fun. Remember to communicate with us if you’re worried about your child’s progress – we’re all on the same team here!
