Principal’s Piece — Justin Harrison

Welcome Back
On behalf of Toolooa SHS, I would like to take this opportunity to welcome our new and returning students to Toolooa for 2024. Whether you are a new family to our school this year, or you are returning once again, we are excited to have you as part of the Toolooa SHS community.

2023 Senior Outcomes
2023 proved to be another successful year for Toolooa SHS Senior outcomes. Not only did we have fantastic academic results and tertiary study destinations for ATAR eligible students, but it was another particularly successful year for students transitioning to apprenticeships, traineeships, and employment. Some of our 2023 Senior outcomes data includes:

  • 100% QCE or QCIA attainment. A big thank you to all staff who supported our students to achieve such a successful outcome.
  • Exceptional Internal and External assessment results for General subjects with many students achieving Total raw scores of greater than 80 out of 100 (A) across multiple subjects.
  • Our 2023 DUX (Academic Champion) is Alyssa Pease. Alyssa achieved our highest ATAR Score of 99.60. She has accepted her first preference offer- Bachelor of Engineering at the University of QLD. Congratulations Alyssa! This a well-deserved accolade and we wish her all the best in her future studies and in life. Alyssa's subject results are as follows:

Mobile Phone Process Change Update
It is with great delight that we report that 'Phones away for the day' is having a positive impact on the culture at Toolooa. Students are more involved in activities at breaks, with Just Dance in the Shelter being a firm favourite, closely followed by the variety of sports also being offered during break time. It is fantastic to see students interacting with each other in a positive way without the distraction of their device. This was a large change in expectations for most students and they have done a fantastic job adapting to the change.

New Performing Arts Complex
Finally, our new Performing Arts Complex and Hardcourts construction is about to start. How exciting! Although there will be some disruptions throughout the construction process, we are very much looking forward to the completion of this fabulous facility – it will be such an asset to our school community! Expected completion will be January, 2025. More information regarding the specifics of the build will be communicated once everything is finalised.

Assessment Calendars
Assessment calendars have been finalised by staff and will be released next week. Students will receive a copy of the relevant assessment calendar and will be required to write their drafts, due dates and exams into their diary. It is recommended that parents sit with their child/ren to unpack the assessment calendar and keep them organised.

School Pick Up
Like all Queensland state schools, Toolooa State High School treats the safety of students, staff, parents, carers and the wider school community very seriously. We work in partnership with the Department of Transport and Main Roads (DTMR), local councils and relevant stakeholders, to ensure there is a coordinated approach to road safety around state schools. I encourage all drivers and pedestrians near the school to exercise caution and patience, especially during peak periods. To help reduce traffic congestion and increase safety for students and other school community members, I encourage all families to abide by the stop, drop and go procedures, allow clear access for buses and even postpone the time that you pick your child up of an afternoon.

Focus Areas for 2024
With some very strong gains in 2023, Toolooa SHS is well on its way for that trend to continue. Toolooa’s main goal is to ensure every student is succeeding. To attain this, our school will focus on the following priorities:

  1. Quality-Assured Curriculum
  2. Improved Pedagogy
  3. Promoting a Culture of Learning

Finally, I would like to take this opportunity to thank the Toolooa community in advance for their continued support of the school’s strategic direction and your child’s education. I encourage all parents/caregivers to contact the school to discuss their child’s education if any concern arises. Reminder, please like us on Facebook for all updates.

Looking forward to another successful year.
