On Tuesday 26th April, 60 of our amazing STEM Squad students engaged in a morning of STEM learning with visiting Professor Ian Frazer and four outstanding scientists from the Mater Research Institute-UQ. Professor Ian Frazer AC is a clinical scientist. As a professor at the University of Queensland, he leads a research group working at the Translation Research Institute (TRI) in Brisbane on various cancers. He is well known as the co-inventor of Gardasil, a vaccine that is used worldwide to help prevent cervical cancer. Students learned about skin cells and the surprising relationship between sunshine, skin cancer, and the bugs and viruses that live in and on our skin. They rotated between a number of fun hands-on activities. Highlights included taking a closer look at cells through microscopes and working in groups to identify how viruses could be stopped from spreading. Thank you Wonder of Science, who arranged the visit as part of the Flying Scientists Program.
