 Good News Stories

Two Toolooa State High School students were awarded as the Gladstone regional winners of the 2024 Future Makers STEM Inventors Challenge, presented by Queensland Museum and Shell’s QGC business.

Aspiring inventors Emily Masters (Year 10) and Hui Yan Hannant (Year 8) wowed judges of the regional student competition with their design concept called DV Bracelet — a discreet wearable device which would safeguard victims of domestic violence.

The life-saving feature of the prospective product is a button that instantaneously alerts authorities and texts a trusted contact with a GPS location, while recording valuable audio evidence.

To avoid detection and preserve dignity, Masters and Hannant stipulated the unisex bracelet would be available in a wide range of designs and colours, and ideally distributed freely via vending machines in hospitals and women’s health centres.

The concept was selected from a shortlist of designs, all responding to the challenge to come up with an environmentally friendly, technology-based solution to a problem faced by youth in their community.

Open to students in Years 5 to 10 in the Gladstone region, the competition started in May with an in-person group workshop teaching technical design principles, organisational strategies and robotics coding using Picoh and Micromelon robots.

Heroes in Health 2024
Heroes in Health2024, is a joint collaboration between JCU and the Mater Hospital – held at the Rockhampton Mater Hospital on Tuesday 30 July.

Students visited the operating theatres, Cath Lab and maternity ward (both groups got to see a placenta), toured the hospital, learnt about Occupational Therapy and Physiotherapy activities and participated in the Pharmacy Webster Packing activity.

Students also heard from professionals including doctors, nurses, physiotherapists, occupational therapists and pharmacists about their profession in the healthcare industry and their career journeys so far.
