Splat Guest Speaker
We had the privilege of Year 9 student George Bero's father William as a guest speaker in SPLAT.
Coming from the focus of his Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture, William spoke of the importance for young people to know who they are. The students were totally engrossed with his knowledge and sharing of culture from Murray Island.
William is a nephew of Eddie Mabo and was heavily involved with his Uncle's action in the High Court of Australia to legally confirm their traditional Native Title rights (which as history shows - a landmark decision in progressing Aboriginal Native Title rights). Will continues to be heavily involved in the recognition and rights of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.
We are inviting him back in a few weeks' time as an hour was not long enough.
Mr Harrison brought William to me as a 'filler' on Parent/Teacher interview night - I had no idea at the time what a wealth of knowledge and a rich part of history I was about to meet.
