Principal’s Piece — Justin Harrison

Welcome Back
On behalf of Toolooa SHS, I would like to take this opportunity to welcome our new and returning students to Toolooa for 2023. Whether you are a new family to our school this year, or you are returning once again, we are excited to have you as part of the Toolooa SHS community.

2022 Senior Outcomes
2022 proved to be another successful year for Toolooa SHS Senior outcomes. Not only did we have fantastic academic results and tertiary study destinations for ATAR eligible students, but it was another particularly successful year for students transitioning to Apprenticeships, Traineeships, and employment. Some of our 2022 Senior outcomes data includes:

100% QCE or QCIA attainment. A big thank you to all staff who supported our students to achieve such a successful outcome.

Exceptional Internal and External assessment results for General subjects with many students achieving Total raw scores of greater than 80 out of 100 (A) across multiple subjects.

Our 2022 DUX (Academic Champion) is Raghav Chawla. Raghav achieved our highest ATAR Score of 99.85. He has accepted her first preference offer of a Bachelor of Advanced Finance and Economics (Honours) at the University of QLD. Congratulations Raghav! This a well-deserved accolade and we wish you all the best in your future studies and in life. Raghav's subject results are as follows:

2022 Outstanding ATAR Results Data:
26% of ATAR eligible students received an ATAR greater than 90.0
50% of ATAR eligible students received an ATAR greater than 80.0
87% of ATAR eligible students received an ATAR greater than 60.0

Top 5 Performing Students

New Performing Arts Complex
The planning phase of our new Performing Arts Complex (PAC) was successfully completed last year. Unfortunately, for reasons that are out of the school’s control, the timelines for the build have had to be extended. The tender process will be completed within the next month, and we can expect to see construction of the new hardcourts beginning late this term. Although there will be some disruptions throughout the construction process, we are very much looking forward to the completion of this fabulous facility – it will be such an asset to our school community! Expected completion will be April, 2024.

Assessment Calendars
Assessment calendars have been finalised by staff and will be released next week. Students will receive a copy of the relevant assessment calendar and will be required to write their drafts, due dates and exams into their diary. It is recommended that parents sit with their child/ren to unpack the assessment calendar and keep them organised.

School Pick Up
Like all Queensland state schools, Toolooa State High School treats the safety of students, staff, parents, carers and the wider school community very seriously. We work in partnership with the Department of Transport and Main Roads (DTMR), local councils and relevant stakeholders, to ensure there is a coordinated approach to road safety around state schools. I encourage all drivers and pedestrians near the school to exercise caution and patience, especially during peak periods. To help reduce traffic congestion and increase safety for students and other school community members, I encourage all families to abide by the stop, drop and go procedures, allow clear access for buses and even postpone the time that you pick your child up of an afternoon.

Focus Areas for 2023
With some very strong gains in 2022, Toolooa SHS is well on its way for that trend to continue. Toolooa’s main goal is to ensure every student is succeeding. To attain this, our school will focus on the following priority:

Effective Teaching—Through Personalised reflection and support from key staff through coaching, mentoring and profiling; all teachers will identify a goal/area that they would like to improve on and work towards achieving it.

Finally, I would like to take this opportunity to thank the Toolooa community in advance for their continued support of the school’s strategic direction and your child’s education. I encourage all parents/caregivers to contact the school to discuss their child’s education if any concern arises. Reminder, please like us on Facebook for all updates.

Looking forward to another successful year.
