John and Karmen from the ANBA Gladstone Branch visited Toolooa on Monday 23rd October to deliver an information session on the native bee hive that has just been donated to TSHS by their committee member, Karmen. On the day students and staff learnt an array of information regarding the bees including their lifecycle and anatomy, habitat, flight distance, pollination, risk and predators. Student and staff were also able to learn about the three native bee species local to Gladstone, and the important work the ANBA contribute to rescuing hives within our community.
John also shared the processes involved with the fostering program and how the current rescue bee hive in our school was rescued. The current bee box on site will be inducted into a new box that our students painted earlier on in the year. Finally, to end the session students are staff were able to look up close, inside two native bee hives John brought in. The group were able to see how two different bee species operate and structure their hives differently. Students are staff were excited with the information they learnt today and are exited to continue to work with ANBA.
