Queensland Youth Parliament
During the Easter school holidays, I had the honour of going to Brisbane for the Launch Weekend as a part of the 26th Queensland Youth Parliament 2021. I was selected as the Youth Member for Gladstone to be a part of the Committee of Justice, Legal Affairs and Corrections. It was a 3-day intensive program where we learnt about leadership skills, media, networking, public speaking and governance by law students running the program. We also had the honour of attending State Parliament House for dinner, being inducted into Youth Parliament in the presence of MP’s as well as the participating in a mock Parliamentary meeting were I had the opportunity to present a speech opposing Queensland leaving the Commonwealth. This was definitely my favourite part of the weekend!
From here, I will be working with my committee to write two bills; firstly, on raising the age of criminal responsibility from 10 to 14, making the youth justice system more support based and secondly, implementing women only police stations to further support victims of sexual assault and family violence in Queensland communities. In addition to this, I am hoping to use my position as Youth Member of Gladstone to get more involved in local issues. I encourage anyone in the school community to contact me if there are any issues/events they wish for me to raise!
I am excited for this opportunity and look forward to going back for parliamentary sitting week during the September holidays!
